Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 0.5 cup orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest finely grated
  • 1 bag (12 oz) fresh cranberries rinsed and picked over

Equipment

  • 1 2-quart saucepan

Method

  1. Combine the granulated sugar, water, orange juice, and orange zest in a 2-quart saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Stir in the cranberries and return the mixture to a boil.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the berries have burst and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce cool for at least 30 minutes; it will thicken further as it cools.

Notes

For the best texture, let the sauce cool completely so it can thicken further. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 10 days; freeze for up to 3 months.
