Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 80% lean
  • 1 cup water
  • 0.5 cup yellow onion finely grated
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tsp paprika
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp ground cumin
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 3-quart saucepan

Method

  1. In a 3-quart saucepan, combine the ground beef and water, mashing with a potato masher or fork until the meat is broken into very fine pieces.
  2. Cook over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring and breaking up the meat often, until no pink remains and the beef reaches 160°F.
  3. Stir in the onion, tomato sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, garlic powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Cook uncovered over low heat for 25 to 35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and spoonable.
  6. Serve warm over hot dogs.

Notes

Mash the beef into very fine pieces before cooking for a smooth, spoonable sauce. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months. For a leaner option, substitute ground turkey for the ground beef.
